Still Life

Still Life

Still‑life paintings focus on the quiet presence of everyday objects, highlighting their form, colour, and relationship to light. In English, still life suggests calmness and pause—a moment held gently in place, while the French call it nature morte (“dead nature”) implying a more final, fixed, motionless state.

These works blend the two ideas—objects at rest, yet not without energy. They invite a slow simple act of looking and an appreciation of the way ordinary things can become unexpectedly beautiful when given time and attention.

Landscapes

Landscapes

One of the bedrocks of visual art. Whatever your favourite part of the world, weather, season or time of day, an artist will never run out of material so you, the viewer will never tire of the view.

I style myself an ardent wanderer and have a vast archive of reference photos and memories to draw on

Mountains

Mountains

The most ardent of my wanderings have been amongst mountains. Their age and scale position you as insignificant: you never conquer a mountain, it conquers you. They demand respect: provide it and you survive. Terrifying, intimidating, gentle, remote or accessible they each have their own specific character. And moods: a mountain displays a different face in a blizzard or a downpour or fresh with dawn or warm with the sunset. Complexity of form, shape, material and grouping offers endless challenge to an artist. Best experienced solo: let the mountains engulf you in their embrace.

Portraits

Portraits

Until you speak your face says everything about you. To paraphrase famous US portrait painter Alice Neel - your face shows "how the world has treated or mistreated you and how you have retaliated". Portraits allow us unfettered gaze at someone's face, a privilege only afforded to the intimate. So here's my gateway into unfettered intimacy - linger at your leisure. I like like to invent stories about  portraits - have  a go-  it can make your viewing much more interesting.

Seascapes

Seascapes

Light motion and space. What else is there to say?

The Dance Studio

The Dance Studio

Move your body to music. Alone, with a partner or in a group; spontaneously or choreographed. You're releasing deep reserves of expression. It's infectious. A magnet for painters of the figure. So graceful.

The Flower Garden

The Flower Garden

Flowers are vital to plants' continued existence and radiate an infinite variety of attraction to insects. They also attract us with their colours, shapes and perfumes. Painting can't capture the perfume (yet!) but artists  have been endlessly fascinated with capturing their individual form and arranging them in beautiful patterns. That their beauty is but fleeting adds to the intensity of appreciation.

Urban Life

Urban Life

Most of the world now lives in cities. They contain great beauty, great ugliness and  a great deal of blandness. Visually they are a tsunami of information for an artist. Abstracting this to something meaningful about what is like to live in a particular city has to be one of the most challenging subjects for artists to capture. I certainly find it so. I live in Birmingham UK so this is what I find on my doorstep as my subject.
